Festive Galloway Beef
South Scotland MSP Emma Harper is encouraging her constituents to support local producers and enjoy Galloway beef Brand over the festive period as she congratulated supermarket giant, ALDI, upon their commitment to promoting and selling Galloway home-grown Galloway Beef products.
Ms Harper, an avid supporter of world class, quality Scottish produce, has continuously lobbied for promoting the provenance and protecting geographical indicator (PGI) status for many products including Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb, Ayrshire potatoes and Dunlop cheese, and has raised a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating ALDI who are championing Dumfries & Galloway’s iconic native cattle breed with the launch of a trio of Galloway brand beef joints across the region’s four stores as well as the other stores across Scotland for this festive season.
Galloway Beef is low in fat and low in saturated fat and the beef is also high in Omega 3 and Omega 6. Both Omega 3 and 6 are necessary for cell membrane development and needed as building block substances needed for regulating blood pressure and inflammatory responses.
Ms Harper commented;
“Galloway is one of the oldest native cattle breeds in the world, but Galloway Beef is rarely available in supermarkets, which makes ALDI’s strong offering this Christmas incredibly exciting and unique. It is also now accepted that Galloway Beef has specific nutritious qualities, Omega 3 and 6 necessary as building block chemicals involved in regulating blood pressure and inflammatory responses.
“In 2017, the breed of Galloway cattle was officially categorised as one of the UK cattle breeds ‘at risk’ by DEFRA, which meant the number of registered breeding females across the UK had dropped below 3,000, but efforts such as this from ALDI encourage demand for the brand and therefore works towards creating a model of sustainable Galloway Breed Beef throughout Scotland and beyond.
“The backing for Galloway Beef by ALDI has been described as ‘transformative’ by the Galloway Cattle Society who believe that this positive step will be the start of a process which will ultimately lead to Galloway Beef becoming widely recognised as a premium brand. The motion I have raised also congratulates the Galloway Cattle Society and all Galloway breed cattle farmers across Dumfries & Galloway for their incredibly hard work to get to this point and I’d like to encourage my constituents to support the brand by buying Galloway Beef from ALDI during this festive season as well as from our local butchers where available”.
ALDI operates four stores in Dumfries & Galloway, two in Dumfries, one in Annan and one in Newton Stewart. The German supermarket giant is also setting its sights on a fifth store in the region to be based in Castle Douglas.
