HOW TO EASE LOCKDOWN RESTRICTIONS INTO A ‘NEW NORMAL’ WORLD

South Scotland MSP Emma Harper has welcomed the publication of the Scottish Government’s document – ‘A Framework for Decision Making’ – which sets out proposals to ease the current coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions once it is safe to do so. Additionally, she has encouraged constituents across Dumfries and Galloway to read the document and make their views heard.

A Framework for Decision Making, which in addition to setting out the proposals to ease the lockdown restrictions, allows people to understand how decisions are and will be implemented over the coming weeks, and commits the Scottish Government to a review of the current restrictions on Thursday the 7th of May.

The South Scotland MSP has reaffirmed that Scotland’s approach to the COVID-19 crisis has always been informed by the best medical and scientific advice available. The Scottish Government has been clear that the strategy for exiting the lockdown restrictions must be phased, must involve everyone and ultimately must allow for a new normal to be created as we adapt to a new way of doing everyday tasks until a vaccine or medicine becomes available.

Commenting, Ms Harper said:

“The ‘A Framework for Decision Making’ document is a welcome step in Scotland’s journey through coronavirus (COVID-19) and marks the start of a national discussion around a new way of carrying out everyday tasks. The document sets out proposals from the Scottish Government on how we can start to ease the current lockdown restrictions, while ensuring that the virus is kept under control and that social distancing remains at the heart of day-day activity.

“I know how difficult the lockdown restrictions have been for many people here in Dumfries & Galloway and across Scotland, and I thank everyone for following the advice, for staying at home and for protecting the NHS and saving lives. However, we do have to be realistic and understand that social distancing is going to remain in place for some time to come until a vaccine and medication is created.

“If people continue to stick with the current regulations, we can start to see easing of the restrictions quicker and I therefore encourage people to read this document from the Scottish Government, and to make their views heard on it. Continuing to limit the spread of COVID-19 takes an effort from everyone across our communities, and I thank everyone for contributing in this process. Easing the lockdown restrictions is no different – we all must be involved, follow the advice and make our views heard.

“If anyone has any questions, or is looking for any advice and support, a reminder that both I and my staff are available.”
